Question BRAIDS

I PLAN TO BEGIN SHOWING THIS SUMMER, AND I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE COULD TELL ME HOW TO MAKE THOSE BRAIDS I SEE THAT ARE VERY CLOSE TO THE MANE, AND ALMOST LOOK LIKE THEY ARE ROLLED UP. HOW DO YOU DO THIS OR WHERE CAN I FIND OUT.
running_ THANX FOR THE INFO!

Eh...can't recall the type of braid that is right now but you should probably order a braiding/grooming book. those have wonderful examples and diagrams on how to braid your horse's mane!

You need a short mane to begin with (like you see in pictures and magezines). Then you devide the mane into 12 or more sections on the right side. braid each section (the same way you would do your own hair) and secure them with a rubber band. Once all the mane is braided, you fold the braid under, then under again. Then, using a BLUNT needle(so you don't prick the horse), Sew the folds using a thread that matches your horses mane. Repeat with all the braids. This is easiest with a wet mane, so the hair sticks together. The mane should be pulled, also, or you'll get ugly hairs sticking up. Practice several times before the show, untill you perfect your braiding skills. Then do the official braids the night before the show if it's a morning show, or the early morning of the show if its a afternoon show. Make sure you get your sewing good and tight, because judges are never impressed when braids fall loose in the middle of the class.

hunter braids or dressage braids?
Dressage braids (buttons) are just braids rolled up and put into and elastic.

hunter braids (plaits) are slightly more complicated! lol
you'll need:
-horse with a 3-4 inch mane
-yarn
-scissors

start at the poll, and use a clip to pull away hair you don't need. start braiding really really tight. when you get about half way down, start adding some yarn. to measure the yarn, wrap from the top of your hand to your elbow. when you get to the bottom, take both ends of the yarn in one hand and tye a knot. then double knot it. using a pull through, pull the braid up through the top of itself. double knot the yarn around the plait.

don't put any show sheen in the mane it'll just make it slippery. some people use water or quick braid. you'll want about 18-30 braids, and remember to PULL THE YARN TIGHT if you want the tight against the neck look.
Sorry if thats confusing, it made sense in my head!
