I mean materialistic in the sense that extra point are given to those with braids. It appears that some shows are becoming to focused on such things....
I know one should have enough pride in themselves and their job as a horseman to present thmeselves and their horse well but to give extra point for one horse that has a braided mane is acenine! It's like giving a band a better score at a competition for the guitarist nice look guitar!
I never said anything about being sloppy. If I were a judge I would not allow the rider in if they were sloppy looking! Presentation is very important but extra point shouldn't be given to one horse for a nicely braided mane.
I have never braided for a show. At first i didn't know how to braid but once I learned Ollie's mane wasn't long enough to braid as it was roached so I couldn't. I may not braid but I make ever aspect of the horse and myself looks great! Just because I don't braid doesn't mean I don't work as hard as the next person who does to prepare myself and my horse physically. I focus very much on training and general care. Braiding has nothing to do with your morals as a horseman. I know plenty of riders who don't braid and are very much focused on every aspect on the horse and rider.
