many people in texas are using the "i dont braid my horses tail because it makes the judge look at the horse more when they see a long flowy tail..."
pfft!! half of the horses at the AQHA shows have fake tails.. i say if you got it flaunt it if it's not yours leave it at home. IMO no offense to the fake tail people out there. but i fully think that you should braid you horses tail in english events ... only

I know my mare isn't the best hunter, and won't ever be! But alot of the people at my stable are slackers...at least I try to work with my horse! AND I try to make her presentable at shows, because I have great respect for my judges. They were chosen for a reason, because they are good horse-people!

Yay, there is a song on the radio that I really like. It makes me think of stuff and then sad stuff and happy and then I get so happy I wanna cry! Sorry, kinda random.

IMO it's to show off your horses neck also I think it looks neat and cleaner up.

I think it's coming primarily from the riders, but the judges are letting them 'get away with it' by not mentioning it? or by not penalising non-braiding in a turnout class etc? Most people (in my experience) still respect the judge, so a quiet comment at the end could go a long way - they see that it DOES matter. Or something?

I would love to braid Ollie's mane for shows but I can't until show season is over because there isn't enough time for it to grow out of his roached mane. I'm going to grow it out short during winter and then pull it and braid it when I feel like it.I'm not going to braid it for every show since I mainly do schooling shows for now but I will braid. I hate looking unprofessional when I get out there. Everything has to be just right. Even for a schooling show. I'm very picky. lol.

I don't believe more points should be added for braided manes and tails though... It's great if you do and it's that much better but horse shows are to demonstrate you and your horses ability, not braiding. You need to go out there well put together but I disagree with giving points for braiding. It's not exactly fair.

It may be unfair, but it is something that everyone can do, so everyone is able to get those points!

I guess it depends on what the class is as to whether it would be fair or not - turnout or best cared for obviously would be fair (surely?).
I've seen kids who've tried really hard and done their own pony's mane (ok, so not to the standard of a professional, but they put the time and effort in) and tail, cleaned their gear, 2nd hand or at least not-new though it may be, washed their horse, go unplaces behind the riders on show ponies who haven't bothered to plait, wash their horse or clean their gear, but who have flash gear and naturally fine skinned ponies etc. At pony club ribbon days. I culd kinda understand if it was at an actual show, but this is at low-level, half fun half experience type days, and the classes are called 'best cared for'! That seems unfair and discouraging to those riders.
