Braiding the tail (not for show, for care)

Question for those of you that braid your horse(s)'s tail to keep it clean and long.

How often to you undo the braid? Do you leave it down for a little while, or immediately rebraid it? How long do you generally leave the tail braided overall?

I do it every day or every other day and I only put a tail bag on in the winter because of flies in the summer

We braid the horses tail in a regular braid. Then we double up the braid and tie it with some string.

We keep the tails braided all the time unless its messy, then it is just rebraided. We put sheets on our horses so we don't have to worry about flies.

Thanks all for the help . I saw on another post that someone put a bunch of string on the end of the braided/folded tail so the horse still has something to swat bugs away with. I was thinking I would do that if I decided to braid a horse's tail to keep it full and long.

I show all the time so my horse's tail is always braided and in a tail bag and I only take off the tail bag before shows to wash it or if it comes off. Her tail is extremely long and full so I also NEVER brush her tail except the day before a show with tons of show sheen to keep it that way.
