Braiding the Tail

When going to a show (hunter/jumper) How should I braid my horse's tail? How do you do the braids from the top of the tail? I can do the simple braids below the tail bone.... but besides that I am "tail brading challenged"

Thanks
Katie

When braiding for a hunter/jumper type show, you do a braid that starts at the top of the tail....do you know how to french braid? Basically you do a french braid, starting at the top of the tail, take a small amount of hair from the edge of the tail on both sides, twist, add another from one side, and start braiding, one from one side, one from the other side...the smaller amount of hair the better it looks, you have to hold it and keep it tight...go all the way to the end of the tail bone, then just make a long thin braid....I braid a piece of yarn at the end,and tie it off, then pull the braid back up through the french braided part...and tie it off...I hope this helps, Cathy

its similar to a "fish bone" or french braid. Start at the very top and braid to the end of the tail bone. Then tuck up and under. Make sure to get it nice and tight or it will fall out. I use moose to help hold it and finish with hair spray.

ok to french braid first start with three sections really small if you want it to look good, then do one cross with each to get the braid started, from then on before you take a piece and cross it over, add a section of hair to that piece (when you add the hair make sure you get the hair from the underside so you don't have any stray hairs) once you get to the end of the bone stop adding hairs and just finish in a normal braid. then there are several ways you can finish it which I'm horrible at but at least around here the one you see most often is the pinwheel, now to do this once start the normal braiding add in a piece of yarn to one of the sections and continue your braid to the end, then once you get there you start to roll the braid up into a little pinwheel, after each roll you thread the yarn through the braid, then once you get to the tail bone wrap the yarn around the wheel a few times to secure it and then you have to do some more sewing which I really can't help you with because I'm horrible at it lol

Regarding messing with a horses tail, is there a risk of being kicked when a horse is not in an enclosed stall, just out in the pasture? Curious about that?
