I do several small braids with yarn, then fold the braid in half (fold under) and tie the end up to the root. Mine look a bit different since Scout has a long mane (not long enough to the the macrame type braid yet)

I usually stick with a running braid (french braid) for Meteor's mane. If it's just to get it wavy to make him look "pretty" (he hates being called pretty

My haflinger has an extremely long, extremely thick mane... and i've experimented with different braids on him, a few of them i made up myself, lol. heres a few of them, the braids themselves are pretty messy-i was just practicing and screwing around most of the time. full braided french braid: (this one takes the longest) http://community.webshots.com/photo/160765527/160769406BInYQY http://community.webshots.com/photo/160765527/160770807RaUBWa French braid: (this one takes 2nd longest) http://community.webshots.com/photo/98697098/130440667XlyLbV http://community.webshots.com/photo/98697098/130441961cAuwWv Half french braid: (this one is very fast and easy) http://community.webshots.com/photo/160765527/182961432McZCpI http://community.webshots.com/photo/190452878/190452878jTzcME (here i used it just to get his mane off his neck for a hot summer ride, so its messy and not as close to the crest of his neck as i usualy make it) http://community.webshots.com/photo/160920465/160920465IlljZv this is that braid only half done, and i didn't keep it up close to his crest- you can make it fall at any length. Macrame (this is the easiest but takes a little bit longer than the half french bc of all the banding you have to do-but is virtually fool proof and can be done in many variations by differeing the number of rows you make and the size of each section) this is a very messy one because i did it in about a minute, and the length of his mane was uneven at the time so this braid can look very stunning, but doesn't here, lol http://community.webshots.com/photo/98697098/131912148pdWXIg http://community.webshots.com/photo/134045012/135419612qVneRs |

if you do a french braid that is the most common. The good thing about braides is you can do alot of them and the hair is all nice and wavy.

I do flat braids for quarter horse shows. I do them differently depending on how many days we will be there. I .... 1) take a small section of hair and with my1st and 2nd finger seperate the small section into 3. 2) pulling downward start braiding do about 4 cross overs(Right over left then left over right 2 times) 3) I add a peice of yarn that is folded in half into the 2 sections of the hair farthest left . (if that makes any sence??? LOL hard to explain) 4) continue braiding till the end try to end up with the peice with out yarn in it, in the center tie it off with a knot at the end 5) with a pull through at the top of the braid in the center poke it through put the 2 ends of the yarn through and pull them through to the top so the end of the yarn are on the oppisite side of the mane. 6)put your finger through the loop the braid has made and pull the yarn ends up untill the knot is a the top of the braid don't pull it all the way through. 7)split the ends of the yarn and in opposite directions loop them around underneath the braid the whole way around back to the top pull up with the ends of the yarn and down with your finger again at the loop untill it is tight 8)then start the first step to tieing your shoe (because it is yarn and it slips a little bit loop on side around throgh the loose tie you made )pushing the braid up a little bit to make a bump on top and pull it all tight. 9) for 2 day shows you can make one knot on top , more then that make 2 ,1 would do it but it does get looser 2 are a lot harder to get out. 10) cut the yarn ends your finshed with a lot of practice they will look really good! getting the out 1) take a seam ripper and cut the top knot 2) unloop the braid and cut the end knot 3) find the 2 yarn ends and pull them away from each other it will just unravel this is really hard to explain if you still need help I can find pics let me know hope this helps ~Christina |
