I would do a running braid... that way if you ever want a long mane you have it. Also if you are showing and are doing really well someone may want to purchase the horse from you and they may want that gorgeous long mane. Once you cut it off it is gone...

Personally, I would pull it to a uniform length, reasonably short,(3 - 4 inches, max) and then plait it properly for the classes you are entering. That is because I dislike a long mane for competitive horses - I find it gets in the way of the fingers, and is untidy. IMO a long mane hides a good neck. Also, the purpose of plaiting is to give a tidy appearance and to keep the mane free of the hands. But I must stress, this is just a personal preference. A running plait would be an easier solution. Whatever makes you happy! And the great thing about hair is that it always grows back. |

LEAVE IT....please? All the arabs and arab x's I know have long manes with running braids. And as another person mentioned, if you ever sell the horse, it's likely the owner will want it long. Can you post pictures? As a fellow arab/draft cross owner, I'd like to see! |

IMHO:If you have ever seen an arabian with a pulled mane you will feel sorry for it! I say leave it... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.... That is how they are meant to be. I just have to ask #1A how can your fingers get caught in a running braid? Also can you please tell me how a reiners long mane looks untidy and how having long manes has kept the offspring of HDI from winning over five million dollars. |

well, go either way - i have a arabx also and for right now its long, but when we start showing its getting chopped! sorry, but it really takes away from his neck and makes him look worse and hides him...plus i event and you have to have it 4".... so do whatever you want! do you have any pics? in hunter, they usually want shorter manes...even if you do a running braid you may get lower scores, i know hunter judges to be very strict and opinionated...its really up to you though also - if she's got draft in her, then it is prolly real thick...jmo...
