Well I'm so excited! I've got a show tomorrow, and I am about to go down to the barn so I can bathe, clip, braid my horse! How short does her mane need to be? Because I am afraid to pull it too short for her mane is very thick and I don't want it to stick straight out in the air!?

well snickers mane is about 4 inches or so,maybe a little shorter and her mane is a good length for braids. so i would say around 3-4 inches IMO. and good luck tomorrow!

It all depends on what type of plaits you're doing whether its English or Western. I have my mare's mane around 4-5 inches as I plait down, pull the plait through the top of the mane and wrap it around (Aussie plaits). If it was much shorter I wouldn't be able to get the plait right. Its all a matter of personal choice

For English braids (hunter/dressage) then 4 inches is a good goal. Hunter braids look best if the main is a little less than 4 inches, and dressage braids can be more forgiving if the main is a little longer than 4 inches (but not much!). Good luck, and have fun!!! |

It just depends on what kind of braids you want to do, IMO. If you're doing yarn (hunter) braids, and the mane is too long (more than 4 inches) then the end result is going to be too long. It won't lay very flat, or very straight. The individual braids sort of wiggle from side to side. If you're doing button braids (commonly used in dressage), where you roll the braid in half, then in half again - then you can certainly have a longer mane to start with. Laying straight is not really an issue with these. If that makes sense. Good luck at your show! Erin |
