What kind of show are you attending, Hunter/jumper, dressage?

This may help.
Hunter/jumper:
Start at the top, part a tiny section about 1/2 thick,( you can go thicker or thiner depending on what you like) the mane is suppose to have anywhere from 28-30 braids. Anyway. Part a little section and start to make a tight braid, at about 1/4 of the way down add the yard in and finish the brain with the yarn in then loop the yarn at the bottom to make a knot. Finish the rest of the mane like that with little braids. When finished with that go back to the top to start looping them under. Get a latch hook and stick it through the top to the braid at the crest, grab the yarn and pull it up through the top, this will give you the loop, then take the yarn around the top and tie it under the braid. You should have two strings and be able to take one each way around the look to tie a knot underneath it. The final step is pinching the braid for it to lay flat to your horses neck. Start to tie your yarn in a knot and before you pull it tight position it at the very bottom of your loop then tighten it. This will pull the loop up and give you that vertical look to the braid. You yarn should have an even amount of the braid below and above it. then Tie one more knot in the center of the braid and you are done.

For dressage just skip the final step and leave it just with a tight loop.

Hope this help...it takes A LOT of practice for it to get very nice, oh and if you have any loose hairs flying around just cut them with scissors. Well thats what I do and it always looks fine..Hairspray it and your ready to go...just remember to take extra yarn, a pair of scissors and hairspray to your show for touch ups.

GOOD LUCK!!!
If this confused you even more sorry
