BOSS...question

I was reading a thread about black horses....and it was mentioned that you can get these BOSS seeds at hardware stores or other places in the bird section...

How do you find the horses like it with the shells?

The shells won't get caught in their throat?

Do they eat it right away?

Or does it have to grow on them whether they like it or not?

Do you add anything else to them ?

Does anyone know where to find Black as Knight feed or the Black Henna shampoo In Alberta Canada?

All info on keeping black looking black would be appreciated.

I have a black mare but she is now brown.....I have a hard time keeping a blanket on her as she is a blanket houdini and wrecks a lot of them and can't afford to keep her in clothes...lol

I would like to try this for next year hoping it would keep her a bit blacker than now....I do realize the best way is inside or blankets but not always possible.

Thanks ahead for all info.

My guy doesnt mind. Thats him though. Yours may or may not.

I dont think so. Many people use it. I havent heard of shells getting caught in their throat ever.

Mine did, but he will eat many things without care. He would have spit it out if he didnt like it.

Or does it have to grow on them whether they like it or not?
from mine, nope. Ate it right away

He still gets his one scoop of grain, one cup canola oil (used to be two before we started BOSS) and yucca. We only use a cup of BOSS though just for extra.

nope sorry. Personally I have never seen BaK here and ive neevr heard of the other.

as for anything else, maybe try to get her on a pasture with more shade? if its available it doesnt hurt to ask (if you board) If not Im not really sure what else to suggest. Some one else will have more ideas

My horses love BOSS. They don't get them often anymore. Nut that is mainly because I'm to lazy to buy them.
My horse also get a cup of Flax every day. Not sure if that helps keep them black, but I know it makes them shiny

My mares love it and will literally eat it before the rest of their feed. I just buy it out of the bird feed section and quickly pick through the bag to check for any foreign material.
