Spend all the time you can with them. groom them, talk to them, let them eat grass on the lead, walk around with them on the lead, start some groundwork. Be slow and sure in your movements. A carrot or two wont go astray. Leave it a little before you jump on their back and give them time to get to know you a litte. Keep the first rides simple and enjoyable.

Good luck with your new pal!

Push them around . Make then stop and go and turn when you say so. A few sessions of this boot camp and your horse will be happy to find someone tough enough for them to feel safe with. You will end up with the friend that you want.

As already mentioned lots and lots of time together (grooming, walks Etc) but you got to be the boss, herd leader.

Round pen work/join up. Spend lots of time with them, but don't let them walk all over you. Set your boundaries early on and be consistent. Also, observe him (or her). Figure out his little quirks, where he likes to be scratched, what his ears do, etc etc. Knowing him inside and out will make you feel bonded.

Also, instead of turning into a push-button treat vendor which can create a nippy pushy horse, do other things to make him enjoy your company. Teach him head down, tickle his tongue until he's licking and chewing, scratch his itchy spots...all of these things will make him happy and content.

Just spend a lot of time with your new companion. Brush him, find out what treats he likes, where he likes to be scratched, do some groundwork, go riding, etc. Getting new horses can be so exciting. Congratulations!

Grooming is a great way to bond, and I incorporate it myself.

However, the horse will bond better with you if you establish that you're the leader from day one.

I agree with everyone else. Groom him and spend as much time with him as you can.
