Question Body Clipping

Hi,
Once you body clip a horse, what can you do to help the coat?
And what time of the year should you clip?
Thanks!

I usually do a full body clip in Sept. and then again in Dec. that way, the horse's coat stays short, they start to shed late january....as far as conditioning the coat...there are several different brands of spray on coat conditioner...Cathy

I always body clp my show horses in December so that thier coat is back in for show season and is nice & neat looking. After clipping mine get Groom-All show sheen put on three times a week and have sheets, blankets & slinkies on.

I usually clip between Halloween and Thanksgiving -- never later than December. I always put a good winter rug on them. As far as the hair itself is concerned, I do nothing special. That's the magic of body clipping -- no hair! You don't have to spend forever cooling out the horse or put them away sweaty. And you can practically forget shedding season.

If you live in a very cold climate you might consider a hood with the blanket. Personally I live in the southwest and while it gets cold, it doesn't get THAT cold, so I stick with just a blanket. If the weather really is that cold then maybe a quarter sheet as well.

Hope that helps!

After September's clipping they usually get a nice hot bath, but when we clip again in December, its usually lotion, and water mixed solution that we spray on the horse.

Any good spray on conditioner helps.
