board or not to board, that is the question

ok so i saw an ad in the newspaper for an extra stall at a private barn. theres an outdoor ring, turnout basically all day, 4 stalls and 8.5 acres of pasture. it sounds like a nice small quite barn which is something i want. its 200 a month which is pretty cheap around here. they live right by kensington park which has really good trails. the barn seems great except they dont have an indoor ring. i dont think you can ride outside in the winter can you?

I don't have the luxury of boarding with an indoor and have pritty limited turnout. I trailer to an indoor as much as I can and most of the time I can ride right up till November-December. Riding in the snow is so much fun and it's a great workout for the horse. Ice is the only really thing you have to watch out for. I have my mare in special shoes durring the winter time. I would go for it if it would work out for you and your horse.

If you have problem with snow, then you might have a problem with riding, but i ride in an outdoor arena all yr round, but it does not get as cold in AR as it does up there.

back home, I rode outside during the winter. our horses never had shoes. didn't find any problems, but that's just me. I'd say it's okay, but I'm no expert.

We ride in the winter here all the time, the only issue is lack of daylight if you work or go to school. It gets dark around 4:30 in the winter Does the $200 include hay? It sounds good....

Personally, I dont think it is good to board. But if you really love horses and dont have room then it is your last choice too get a horse. So if you dont have room go for it!

I say go for it. That's the exact same type of barn where I board my horse. I love it! He gets sooo much more turnout there than he would ever get at a boarding barn, and turnout is the most important thing to me. It's nice and cheap and usually private barns take better care of horses than at a boarding barn b/c there are fewer horses. Plus the owners of the barn usually care a lot more about horses. At least that's what it's like around here.
