I have started feeding him better, and now his black has brown ends. He has always lived in a pasture. But his shoulders and neck have lots of brown, he is shedding will get go back black, he didnt fade last summer. what would make him do it now. help

Roans are known to change colors with the seasons. Some get whiter during certain seasons with others get darker. Someone even get more red, my b/f horse does this, it is very likely the color will go back come summertime.

I have a blue roan paint and at her black points (ears, and some small splotches in the blue roan colored patches) there is some brown/aburnish color in them. It's just their coloration. And, like Moostang said.. they do change with the seasons.

Like all other horses, Roans do get darker and lighter changing with season.

We had a blue roan in training that changed colors in the seasons. It's pretty normal with roans.

If the tips of his hair is fading to a reddish/brownish/coppery color, it may be due to a lack of sufficient copper in his diet. Dark horses need more copper than lighter colored horses to maintain the dark color, unless they have inherited the wonderful non-fading gene.

I think this is normal, our red roan mustange changes color, it's like always having a different horse... if only his attitude would change.

i was ince told copper for my black mare when she was turning brown tinge so we fed copper supplement however it made her go even more brown.. we concluded she was a very dark bay and her coat was black due to being dull and not proper colour. The mare then dappled. our coloureed mare is roan and white. she goes dark in winter then goes blue roan then she goes almost white/grey, then she goes strawberry roan and in summer she is almost just bay and white and can hardly see the white through her coat.
