Question Blue bag?

I was reading in a little book about Handy Horse Hints. They recomend putting a blue bag in rinse water to make horses whiter. What does a blue bag got to do with whitening? I dont see blue bags making any difference, thats a new one on me.

Their reference to 'blue bag' was likely a reference to a specific product that was available at some time.

What's used now, by some, it liquid bluing. It's what was used on whites before bleach was available. You can usually find it in the laundry section of the grocery store. I usually add a squirt to my rinse water or my conditioning rinse for my grey.

That is what I was thinking, however when it states blue bag it doesnt begin with capital leter like other products mentioned in the book and it says add a blue bag and etc.. This is how it states to a T.

"Add a blue bag to the rinsing water when bathing grey or parti coloured horses, to give a really blue white finish."

If it was a product shouldnt it stated this way? Add Blue Bag to rinsing water when bathing............. That would make me think then it was a product.

Thank you for the input.

Bleach has been out since 1774 the year it was invented. Bleach was available before bluing.

This is the basics what makes up bluing. I only put a partial of the page to look at.
Basically, bluing is made of a very fine blue iron powder suspended in water ( a "colloidal suspension"). We add a nontoxic amount of a pH balancer and a biocide to prevent the buildup of algae and bacteria. (This may be why Mrs. Stewart's Bluing is loved by farmers who tell us they use it in the water troughs of their farm animals and by owners of lily and fish ponds.)
Mrs. Stewart's Bluing is nontoxic, biodegradable, non-hazardous and environmentally friendly. While we cannot guarantee that no one will ever be allergic to Mrs. Stewart's Bluing, we can say that we have not seen any reports of such an allergy thus far. In fact, several of our customers use Mrs. Stewart's Bluing because it is one of the few laundry products from which they do not experience an allergic reaction.
Mrs. Stewart's Bluing is a simple, concentrated blue liquid that optically whitens white fabric. It does not remove stains, does not "clean", but adds a microscopic blue particle to white fabric which has been giving fabric that "just bought" whiteness for 120 years!
In the old days, the only way to buy blueing was in a small net bag which you would put in your rinse water.

It was also the cure for things like bee stings.
