Blood in Urine

So tonight I took my young (4yo) out. This left the old 22yo mare who had cancer 7 years ago and my 9yo mare who has just been turned out for winter after a successful summer show jumping.
Now it was just on dark when I returned to the paddock with my 4yo and I noticed a patch of urine that had blood in it. It was lucky as who ever it was had peed where the ground was a bit pugged up.

What can cause blood in urine????

The 9yo mare has been coughing a bit for the last 1-2, it hasn't been that bad. At first I thought it was because the chaff I was feeding her but she hasn't had that for a week and she is still coughing and I've even came out there has been white snotty stuff coming out of her nose.

The 22yo had cancer in the eye 7 years ago. The vets thought they had taken most of it when they took the biopsy as she never went down hill in condition.

All three horses are acting happy and moving around normally (by that I mean running away from me when I try put their covers on and have the wee fight over the best patch of grass) and they all still have a big appetite.

I rung the vet once inside (just got off the phone with her) and she said to make sure they are still happy and eating and she will come out Monday (it's Saturday in NZ) if they stay the same/normal.

I see you are from New Zealand, excuse my ignorance, but do you have snow there at this time? Sometimes when horses pee in the snow it looks orangy-red-which can be quite normal. This has something to do with some oxidation process between the urine and the snow.

If not.....was it a dark red, light red, any clots present? A bacterial infection or renal stones can cause blood in the urine. Some other symptoms that would show up include being unable to void, straining, or frequent urination. They may also dribble urine.

The following is information on kidney stones from the Merck Vet Manual (they use the big word urolithiasis, it is the same as kidney stones):
http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/in.../bc/130405.htm

I am still looking for information on urinary tract infections and am having a hard time finding one from a credible source. I'll keep searching and see what I can come up with.

As Tami said, urine oxides and turns reddish/orangish. It's most visible on snow, but it can be easily visible on plain ground too. You just don't see it (much) when they pee on shavings or grass or anywhere it might just all soak in or disperse

NZ has just came out of Summer so no snow to June

It was defiantly blood which was clotted. I got my dad to check it out straight away (he is a Dairy farmer with a good animal health knowledge, he also deals with bloody stuff all through calving season) and he agreed with me.

Vet came out today and checked my 9yo over. She took bloods but when I went to get my mare she had a pee while I was there and there was no blood. The vet found nothing wrong with her heart, lungs/respiratory and put her arm in and checked her bladder which was also fine. She also checked her temperature which was normal. She said from what she sees/heard/felt there is nothing to point out any thing out of the normal but she took bloods just in case.
