Bleach in water trough?

My farrier said this is what she does at her farm to keep the algie down. One cup of bleach added in with the water. Now she has one of the really big troughs.

Has anyone heard of this? Or does anyone do it?

I don't know about bleach but if we run out of water and have to use dam water we sterilise it with the stuff you use for sterilising babies bottles and such.

I think we use 1 bottle(750ml or a litre, cant remember) to 250 gallons.

It kills the bacteria and any algae stuff. It is then safe to drink but I only use it that way for washing or showering. I keep the good stuff for drinking.

Interesting. I have never heard of this. Even though it is diluted, I would not feel comfortable having them drink bleach water. I have found adding Apple Cider Vinegar helps.

Yes. Been there, done that many times.

What many people don't realize, is after you pour the Bleach in with water, it eventually breaks down and turns into "salt water".

It doesn't remain "bleach". Which is Sodium Hypochlorite. (NaOCl)

What is salt? Sodium Chloride (NaCl)

Once out of the bottle and another reaction occurs, the Oxygen molecule breaks off.

And leaves you with.....SALT!

Just the oxidation process is what is "dangerous". it occurs quick though. that and too much Salt is bad for anyone. Hence the "dilution" factor if you use it to disinfect your water sources.

Very cool. I figured there had to be some good reason a farrier would recommend/do this.

Does it help enough with Algie to mess with it BW? Or should I just continue to empty and scrub my trough every other day?

Well, I never scrub buckets except maybe monthly when i used it.

Course with a large trough, I prefer fish over bleach

Any chance of harmfull effects with the bleach? Do I need to keep them out of the trough when I first add the bleach? I have one of those small trough's (only about a foot high or less). How much bleach should I use?

capful per gallon

1-2 Tbsp per gallon is in essence what it is....probably closer to 1.

So how many gallons is your tank?

Personally, I add the bleach first, then fill the tank.

Ensures a good "mix"

never seen issues on keeping them off for an hour or letting them have immediate access as long as the dilution factor is correct.
