We used to use fish in our trough when it was spring fed. The one at my new barn is filled from a hose - do you think fish would survive in that or do they need the constant supply of fresh water?

My old trough was filled from a hose. Auto Waterer. once a week during the summer, I'd "overflow" it to "refresh" the water.

My friend use to NEVER overflow his. And it was clear as anything you've ever seen. Awesome plant life, awesome environment! Awesome tasting water too!

That looks like a 50 gallon tank to me. I've often wanted to try the bleach method for controlling the algae in the water, but I'm too chicken to take the chance. LOL So, I just scrub them out by hand as needed.

The bleach won't hurt them if mixed in small enough amounts, no more than drinking municiple water treated with chlorine will hurt you. Just don't use the scented bleaches of course.
I don't like doing it. What I usually do is scrub the trough down when it starts getting too bad and use bleach to clean it, then add fresh water after I clean it.
I agree with the fish too if you have a big trough. Most of the poop from them falls to the bottom so doesn't hurt the horses.

Yeah, I scrub mine every other day usually. Unless of course Poncho decides to play in it (with his big feet), which he has done the last two days. So it got cleaned two days in a row. Hopefully he will decide to give me a break today. LOL

We have the same tub. It gets power washed every few days because I have one horse who hates the smell of bleach. I always used to scrub with bleach 'til we got him. I'm afraid he won't drink if he gets a smell of it so we just power wash it. It's a pain in the neck but what ever it takes.

'Bleach' is an approved sorce to sterilize water for humans to drink in time of emergency. I don't remember the amount for sure but it's either 1 tsp (or 1 TBSP) per gallon.

I have in the past used fish in tanks and they did keep them cleaner but have since learned that it's not really a good idea as you are polluting the water with the fishes feces

Try planting some water lilies in your tub as well as adding fish. Your horses get a mini natural pond and you get a beautiful water garden. The fish eat the algae and mosquito larvae, the plants eat the fish poop the horses get clean water, you don't have to scrub. Everyone wins.

You do need to cut the lilies back now and then though as they so spread a lot.
