I dunno. They call him black, but he really dances on the borderline of what I define black and what I define brown. I have seen some VERY brown looking horses test black... much browner than him. But that's an awfully defined flank color.

Man I wish I could test him.

After getting the color report back on one of our fillies, I'm not as dubious about horses claiming to be black that show odd coloring. He may very well be a black, but then again, I'm fast getting to the "show me the color report" for conformation. Hey may be black, but I'm not sure of homozygous black....at least not without a color genetics test.

Our filly has chestnut tufts on the inside of her ears, but she came back from testing as a black. She's heterozygous black, not homozygous. Here are pics of her at 8 hours old and 16 weeks old.

She is also shedding out most of her solid black coat and looks like she's turning grey, but she isn't grey. She's a Knabstrupper, so that LP fun is going on.

I think this particular stallion is actually homozygous black....I'm pretty sure he was on our list of homozygous black WB stallions

Yes I think he is too... I didn't see a single chestnut foal by him.

Well he could be homozygous for black (as in EE) and still be brown....

Probably......and that may be right. Like I said, I'm kind of at that "show me the color genetics test" when they claim to be certain colors - especially when they claim the "homozygous" bit.

He is a purty boy, that is for sure, no matter what the genetic markers say about his color.

I need to do some more reading on "sweat fade". If there was ever a case for it, this is one. But really, without a test, we'll probably never know.

True, but I don't think that was what was being questioned with that statement. More EE = non-fading black theory.

Unless I misunderstood
