I do Western Pleasure on my QH, Jack. He's 8, so in order to compete I have to ride him in a shanked bit. He goes, slows, steers, engages, lowers his head and stops off leg/seat and voice aids. So really the bit is just to get him used to being in a 'big bit' as we call them. And train him so we can show more extensively. I talked to a couple of trainers about my horse at a WP clinic and they all told me that I should use a Billy Allen shanked bit. I would love to hear anyone's opinions, thoughts and experiences with this bit. Does the roller of the Billy Allen avoid the 'nutcracker' action of the Tom Thumb bit? Also - any tips or pointers for training the horse or myself would be very much appreciated (: Thankyou.

It depends what your horse goes well it. The billy allen bit is nice, and there are other options. I normally use a spoon bit or a correction bit. Each horse will have different results.

Are there any training exercises we can do to get ready for the bit?

They don't offer much tongue relief. They are nice though, in that there is not nutcracker effect, but you can pick up one side to do lateral work. I too like spoon bits and correction bits. I'm a big fan of correction bits. A lot of horses go well in correction bits. A spoon bit is for a very experienced, broke horse. You can really scare a horse in a spoon bit if you push them into it too fast. Look at the corrections at www.sstack.com I like the spring loaded ones and the ones with copper rollers.
