Bike helmet vs. Equestrian helmet

What are the structural differances between a bike helmet and an equestrian helmet, and what potential problems come from wearing a bike helmet for horseback riding? I've known kids who always just used their bike helmet- not the bike helmets with the big lumps in back, the basic ones.

I think riding helmets are stronger and cover more of your head. I mean a bike helmet really only covers the top.

really? I've seen quite a few bike helmets that covered just as much of the head as equestrian ones. Some bike helmets cover the top, but most that I've seen anyway look about the same as equestrians.

A "complete" bike helmet, in my opinion, is no different than an equine based helmet.

Just be aware, Bike helmets are not "approved" to be used in certain shows.......

and if you give lessons, to cover you liability wise, and you provide the helmets, use the "approved" ones just to CYA.

In a fall from a bike the victim is statistically likely to hit the top or front of their head. In a fall from a horse the victim is statistically likely to hit the back or side of the head. Helmets are designed for the sport they are marketed for, and only approved for that one type of activity. Equestrian helmets have more impact absorbtion and more coverage in areas more likely to be the area of trauma.

Equestrian helmets have to be approve by the A.S.T.M. ( American Society for Testing Materials). Most horse shows wont let you participat w/o one. Also in 4h you are required to have one to show. Equestrian helmets have been specifically tested for falls from a horse, which is much higher than a bike.

While 'complete' bike helmets are fine for lessons and schooling, they're not accepted in shows. As Cowgirl said, bike helmets aren't tested for a fall from a horse...whereas equestrian helmets are--seeing as how they're specialised helmets .

You can get really good ones for $45-70
