Question Bicycle Helmet=Riding Helmet

Ok there has been alot of discussion about helmets lately. I told my son he has to start wearing one during his lessons. He has a helmet for his bicycle and I was wandering if he can use the same one. Are they basically the same thing?

Here is a picture of his helmet. Is it oK to use for horse riding too?

The barns I've boarded at do not allow bicylcle helmets to be worn in place of riding helmets. I think I'd spend the $30 and get a riding helmet for him (and yourself!!!).

Bike helmets don't cover as much as horse helmets do. Horse helmets extend down closer to the neck, whereas bike helmets do not.

Much safer to get a horse helmet!

Horseback riding helmets actually follow a different (and more stringent) safety standard than bike helmets. You can use your horse-backing riding helmet to ride a bike, but not vice versa.

You could use a bike helment, but like everyone else has said they are not as safe as an actual riding helment. The back doesn't come down as far and the saftey standards are higher than a bike helment.

I do think it is important to get a riding helmet...but in the interim... having your son wear his bike helmet seems like a safer option than nothing at all.

My neice started lessons about 2 weeks ago and her first day she brought a bike helmet and I wouldn't let her use it. I gave her mine instead to use for the time being. The bike helmets do not cover the head as the riding helmets do nor do they have the protection needed. It just isn't safe in my eyes. If you can't buy one right now, it's better than nothing.

Bike helmets arnt desinged for the kind of force you might face horse riding. They are made of a slightly softer material and im sure as a parent you'd rather know that he's going to be as safe as he can be. Id deffinately say get him a proper riding helmet!!! I never ride without mine! EVER!
