Best time to Roach (hog) a mane?

Is it bad to Raoch/hog an horses mane at any time? Im going to do Cherrys and I was wondering if its better to do it in the summer? It gets really cold around here durring winter and I didnt know if her not having a mane will affect her? Thanks!

I don't believe the mane is going to make that much of a difference for keeping in heat. I would think the only benefit would be for bugs during the summer time, although most horses don't have long enough manes to swish much off anyways.

If you roach it now(assuming show season's over for you) it will have time to grow out for spring. I agree, I'm not sure how much warmth the mane gives a horse, I don't think it's too drastic.

How do you do it? Ive heard a few differant ways and I was just wondering.....Im thinking sissors.....

When I did it to my mare (blanket rubbed half the mane away) I just used clippers and buzzed all the way up to the ears. I left a bit at the withers and the forelock.

I was palnning on leaving just her forlock, does it matter if you leave some on just her withers? And about how close do I cut it? (I dont have buzzers)
