Beach ride - horse just back in work after 5 week lay off

Sam has been off work for about 5 weeks - just came back into work last Saturday.

He has not lost any muscle - (he has put on some weight tho)

All we have been doing since Saturday is some light work in the school - mostly lots of walk with little trots. Started at 15 mins and now we are at 30 mins - more trotting but still no canter work.

On Saturday we are going to the beach with the riding club

I intend only to walk him - however as there will be a lot of horses there, it is cold and windy and he is a typical TB I am not entirely sure if my plan will work out

That is to say if he gets very excitied and lots of others are off for a gallop he might just decide to go for a little run.

I know many might say I should have him so well schooled he will listen to me - all well and good in theory - however in reality as we know when the adrenalin gets up sometimes they just stop listening - lol

Anyway my question is - provided I give him a good warm up - i.e. manage to keep him in check for at least 20 mins - if he does decide he is going for a gallop with the others will he be ok?

Personally, I wouldn't risk it. The risk of pulling a muscle and/or injurying a tendon is just too great.

Um, maybe a short canter, but I wouldn't gallop him just yet. But that's just my opinion. Good luck, and have fun!

work on sand is exceptionally hard on a horse's tendons and so its not recommended at all to take an unfit horse onto the beach.

Rather get him fit with a lot of walking first and only then take him on to a beach.

Definitely not galloping either

I agree with the others I would not do it. After five weeks of being off work it is going to be alot of strain on his muscles. There will be a greater chance of him getting unjured.

I conquer, it may not be good to do that. I'd be sad too, maybe you could take a school horse? Or just take him and go for a light canter. If he feels like going (I know how you feel) he feels like going!

I personally would never gallop in the sand, a jog or slow canter for a couple min. at the most...Cathy

We have nice firm Sand - when the tide is out it is great for a gallop - I dont gallop on soft deep sand

Thanks everyone - I will take him but I wont go with the others - he is good on the beach on his own and he will stay in walk - I did think that going with a group was a bad idea and you have all confirmed my fears are justified - thanks

Good decision - you won't regret it If he'd only been off a week or two, I'm sure the replies would have been different
