They make a "dry shampoo" for dogs and cats. Why don't you contact your vet and see if it would be safe for a horse?

Failing that could you get him inside for a day? Wash him in WARM water, cover him with a blankie, and give him 24 hours to fully dry inside?

well he has been kept inside becuz of his weight and the lice problem but our barn is really really drafty and he cant afford to catch a cold as his immune system is really low

I have used that dry shampoo for dogs on my horses, and it works great. The one I used is an oatmeal base... in fact it is good for the skin and hair.

Also, you can buy (also for dogs!) packets of bathing wipes that are just a larger and thicker version of baby wipes!! They also work great, and dry fast. (I know a lady that buys the dog wipes to send to her son in Iraq!)

If you can't find them (I always get them at WalMart!) you can use baby wipes! You will go thru a lot of them, but it works.

If he is a bit damp from the wipes, I would still rub him with a towel and maybe blanket him for a while, just because he is compromised a bit now.

Let us know how it all works out!

Groom him up really good with a rubber curry and a stiff brush, then what I would use is Cowboy Magic Green Spot Remover

With how dirty that horse is..I would recommend hot toweling. You could do one section at a time which would keep him from getting cold. I.e. do the right hind quarter, wait for him to dry, do the left hindquarter, etc.

You can lice dust him with Farman's Lice Duster and then rub it in. As dirty as he is it will be very hard to get all the mud off without batheing him.

Is there a heated barn in your area that you could trailer him to for a warm bath?

Are you sure that it's lice with the weather as cold as it appears to be whereever you are and not a nutritional imbalance?

I agree with hot toweling him, it works great and he shouldnt catch a chill as long as you take it slow and let each area dry.

Maybe consider seeing if someone around you has an indoor barn with warm water to get him clean there for a day or two.
