Bathing in winter...

Sorry if this topic has already been brought up, I couldn't find it if it was.

What do you do about really filthy horses in winter time? Groom, groom, groom, I know. However, I've taken in a rescue and she's way too filthy to get clean by grooming (and of course now the weather is really nasty). Is there anything I can do to get her really clean without freezing her or is 50 degrees an ok temperature to bathe (we do have hot water)?

I never bath in the winter, far too cold... There are things like baby clothes that can be used and of course, like you said, lots of grooming! Unless it's 60+ out I do not bath, even though I very tempted to at times lol

There's some 'waterless shampoo' out there.. I've used it before in the early spring time when I had parades and such to go to. It works well, you just spray it on and rub it off.

Not sure how well it actually CLEANS them, but it makes them LOOK clean and shiny.

Hm, I'll have to try that

I think 50* is an okay temp. to bathe, as long as you dry her off as best as you can afterwards. I do at least, and nothing has ever happened to any of our horses. Just make sure you dry her off, and you should be okay.

I have bathed horses in the winter (used warm water).
Dried them off as good as I could, and gave them lots of hay to eat and a nice warmed up din din. If I had coolers I would have thrown them on, but they just finished *air drying* in their stalls.

As long as you dont throw a sopping wet horse out in the elements, I dont see a huge issue with it.

Its good for touch ups too - if you bath the day before, and wake up to a dirty horse.

You've got some good advice here. Whatever you do just make sure she doesn't catch cold.

If you have warm water, and a place out of the wind, plenty of towels, and blankets you can wash her....once you have her washed, and squeegied (sp?) and toweled off, blanket her and get her moving to warm her up....I usually take a horse that is shivering and lunge them to get them warmed up....make sure to change the blanket, as they will soak up the dampness....Cathy
