| Senior Moderator | Bath + Roll in dirt = good or bad for heat? Yesterday when I went out to visit the boys there were three of us out there and all we did was rinse down the horses since it was so HOT(112 degrees!). Of course the horses then go out and roll in the loose dirt changing Scout from grey/white to brown. But I was wondering does the dirt keep the heat in or help cool them down? I know it helps with flys, but if it is going to make them hotter then its not worth it. |

| Senior Member+ | You have entirely too much *thinking* time on your hands girlfriend!!! LOL Good question though. Kind of like dogs digging in the dirt to get cooler.

| Senior Member+ | I have always heard, read and been of the understanding.. That not only is it good for keeping way flies, But a sun screen , which makes sense dust is Filled with micca.. and it keeps them cooler.. Not sure how that works.. but its what I have always heard.. Its been blasting hot here too.. Took Denny down to the lil creek Where I board,, he loved that I LOVE your avatar btw. Paula

| Senior Moderator | My understanding is that it does help with heat, plus flies and sun. I ride three horses last night, hosed them all off and turned them out to "mow" the lawn around the barn. All three of them left the lush green grass to go roll in the pile of arena sand and compost before coming back to eat. I figured that they knew something I didn't.

| Senior Member+ | I figure if they aren't stomping and swishing so much (since the mud helps keep the flies off), that ought to keep them cooler, too.

| Senior Member+ | I vote keeps them cooler.....as the mud soaks up the water, and eventually falls off, leaving the "dust". Ice keeps a horse warm in the winter, not sure if it DOES keep them cooler, but it helps with flies.....which in my eyes, are WORSE than the heat right now.

My horses are always dirty in the summer heat. If I set up a sprinkler to cool them off....they play in it a bit....and then grind themselves into the dirt until they are thoroughly coated. ![]()
