Barrel Racing Prospects

In a couple of weeks I'm going to a huge AQHA sale. They will be selling 500+ horses. I recieved the catalog in the mail for the sale the other day and spent several hours that night picking out which horses I had an interest in looking at. I found two that I was very interested in looking at for barrel racing prospects.

One is an appendix bred bay gelding. He is 10yrs old and was used a little as a heading horse and was hauled some. He is out of Gallant Man on the top and Easy Jet ont he bottom. For those who don't know who Gallant Man was he was and exceptional TB racing champion in the late '50s.

The other is a 4yr old appendix bay mare. She was retired off the track. The lady bought her intending for her to be a barrel horse but just doesn't have the time to train her. She is out of Easy Jet on the top and Northern Dancer and Top Moon on the bottom. She also looks to have Triple Chick and Go Man Go just off her papers.

I am very excited about getting to check out both of these horses and just maybe I'll come home with one if the price is right *crosses fingers*.

Cool

Just make sure that you look with critical eyes. The first one may be a little old to start on barrels, check to see if you can ride them the day before the sale. Many times they get there a day early so people can window shop. The second one is a much better age (and pedigree), but may be a little hot because she was racing. Good luck! I hope one of them is your dream horse!

Thanks for the tips everyone. I will definetly be very critical. I'm not very worried about the first horse being too old. I just purchased and 10yr old off the track last summer and have started him on barrels... he's doing wonderful. I am more interested in the second one though and I think she'll be closer to my price range. I've trained a number of horses off the track before so I'll really check her out closely. I will make sure she wasn't retired due to injury or things like that. I'm also taking my mother with me b/c as much as I know she has 30 yrs more experience than I which will really come in handy and being an ex-QH jockey she really knows about horses off the track.

Thanks for the tip about the roping horses. I've never bought a roping horse before so I hadn't really thought about that. I'll check on the x-rays and I definetly plan on riding each around a little before purchasing.

I hope one turns out to be a dream too.

Anymore thoughts are welcome. I appreciate everyone's ideas and opinions.
