Barrel Racing Clinics???

Our barn right now is pretty much half dressage and half western speed riders. We're going to host clinis next year.

I've hosted dressage clinics before, but not barrel racing clinics.

Are the lessons private or are they a small group affair? If you've hosted them how many riders do you generally have?

Thanks.

Most of the clinics I've seen, barrel wise, are small groups.

It'd be a good idea to run it like the dressage clinic & do a couple small groups at different times. The size usually depends on how much space you have.

Generally 20 to 30 horses/riders are as many as you want for the clinic to be worthwhile. And it's group lessons on Friday and Saturday, with those willing to pay extra doing hour long "private" lessons either in the evenings or on Sunday. Also, the best clinics will video the first runs in the beginning and the last run of that day. Then the first runs on the second day and the final run on the second day. Then the videos can be watched and discussed with the "trainer/Pro" you bring in and the students. We used to have to dub VCR tapes for each person but now with CD's it's super easy to offer each person a cheap copy of their runs.

A GOOD clinic with a well known Pro would run about $250 to $400. A "lesser" known or Local trainer would run about $150 max.

Usually it's small groups...

I ditto what doublebarr said about price.

I went to a few a couple of years ago with a local (but very good) trainer and it was 10-15 riders, $175. It ran for 6 weeks, every monday night for 2hrs.

We had a clinican offer to waive his rate, we just have to pay his expenses. Which can be just as pricey. I guess he's an AQHA world champion trainer. I ride at a military barn so he wants to do it for the military folks. But we'll offer the barn 1st pickings, then charge the outside folks a higher price to help cover his expenses, if we decide to do this.

Smaller groups are nice but I would definitely see if you can get a video camera from someone. Taping the runs and selling the DVDs are a good way to make a small profit or just learn from.

I think its also cool (if you have riders of relatively the same experience) to have a "ride off" or have a "most improved" award. Just something to look forward to so that everyone can show off what they learned.

Thanks for the ideas. Yeah I was thinking about hosting a little bit of a ride off after the event. Videos are always fun. I can probably con my friend do to the videos, he's done weddings before haha.
