    Barrel Racing...adding speed.

Okay. so, i just bought a horse for barrels.
Hes an 8 year old AQHA .
around 14.2 hands.(: *short little guy*
He is patterned very well. Has competed in 2 locals. I just rode him last weekend, @ a gymkhana. Hes AWESOME at Washington poles. getting 25 sec. & placing. He is getting 22 seconds in barrels. He has been trained very well in them. & he is ready to add speed. I would just like him to be running around 18's. What are some good exercises, to get him ready for adding speed to them. & how do i do it ?
    Thanks!

I have always gone by/have heard of others going by the basic principle of asking for speed from 3rd to home first. Then when they get that, asfor it from the 2nd barrel to 3rd, AND 3rd to home, etc..I'm sure you get the picture Basically ask for speed to the first barrel last. It has seemed to help a lot with my mare.

If he is patterned well and doesn't need any major corrections as far as the pattern goes, then all you can do it take him to shows and start asking for a little more a little at a time. It's called seasoning a horse. As T-N-B said, ask for speed to the 1st barrel last.... let him breeze to the 1st, place him good, let him turn, then push him a little to the 2nd and 3rd. Just take your time and add the speed slowly. He will let you know if you are pushing too hard too fast.

Really, the only exercise that might help you is to breeze him. I breeze all my horses along side another horse to teach them to run, teach them to use themselves and teach them to be competitive.

This is what I do ill breeze them!! That or ill set up just one barrel at the opposite side of the arena and push them to it pretending its third barrel so they have a chance to get some speed built up and getting them to rate and then turn it! Then when there good with this ill put up two barrels (depends on the size of the arena I have to set mine up sideways from the normal pattern) I will run them like first and second basically doing a figure 8 but because of the distance apart they get a chance to build up some more speed too! Its basically building your horses confidence and yours as well with it too! You can also practice maybe making like a hissing noise and doing roll backs back and forth down the arena and when your pushing your horse make the noise to teach your horse that is the noise to pick up speed too! It will help threw the pattern when you need to add speed!
Somewhere behind the barrel racer you’ve become, the hours of riding, the horses you pushed, the horses that pushed you, and your fans who cheer for you, is the little girl who fell in love with the sport and never looked back… ride for her

When I say "breeze them" I mean faster than a lope/canter, but not full out run them as fast as they can go. When I do it along another horse it's sort of like a race and it teaches the horses to be competitive and teaches them how to run. Believe it or not, you do have to teach some horses to run .... they dont believe they can haha
