Bareback

How do you go about getting a horse used to bareback? I've only had him a couple months so i don't know that much about him but he's trustworthy under saddle so i feel comfortable trying it. He's good double back if that counts for anything? so how should i try it? just hop on and have someone hold him or is there a way to get him used to it. I've just been putting my arm around his back with no saddle and leaning on him to see if he minded and he doesn't lol. Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks!

Lay across his back first, rub him all around, if he's good, pet him say good boy, then hope on. Sit there for awhile, get him used to the feeling. Shouldn't be hard, most horses don't have a problem with it.

Honestly I just got on my mare. She didn't do anything unusual. Use a mounting block to get on. Though there is a way to get on from the ground. You stand a little infront of their shoulder facing their rear and you have your left hand just infront of the withers holding the mane. And then you take kinda jump and land and on the second jump you really only use your left leg to hoist yourself up and you have your right leg bent a little to get over the back...I was taught this way but I was never able to do it LOL But it may work for you

Jumping on is extremely hard for me, and my horse dislikes it A LOT. Your best bet is to get up there using a mounting block, bucket, or have someone hoist you up. If he's good under saddle, he should behave bareback. Remember to wear a helmet, too, as bareback is just as risky, if not more, as having a saddle on.

I've never had a horse that did not like bareback, I started my babies out leaning on them when they were in the cross ties, when I was grooming them, and eventually sat on them in the cross ties, but they were quiet babies, and not untill they were 2 yrs. old, had my friend lead me with a halter and lead around a little, I havn't got on my TB mare bareback, she is too flighty, and likes to walk on 2 legs.....:O
