Depends what kind of horse it is. Usually four inches below the point of hock. Get someone to put there arem under the horses tail at the dock to raise it slightly as though the horse is moving. Then cut it straight, level with the ground 4" below the hock. Jo x

For dressage, cut it at the fetlocks, eventing is usually at the hock, and western I guess it needs to be as long as possible. Have someone hold the tail in it's natural carriage position so it looks neat riding, hold the hair and run you hand down it so you get all of the hairs, and cut it at the desired length depending on what disipline you ride in. The tail looks much fuller after you bang it too! |

It really depends on what type of showing you want to do and what breed of horse you are showing. Also there are a lot of different ways to bang a tail...it all just depends on what your personal preference is. I personally don't bang my horses tails i have done it before the way i have banged a tail is the tail is straightened so that there are no curls or bumps in the tail. to start you put the tail flat between your 2nd and 3rd finger and run your hand down the tail to get it straight. then cut the tail straight while using your hand as a straight edge....I know that kinda doesn't make sense but I don't really know how to explain it very well. sorry! But I hope that helps you! |

if it is the straight-edge look when the tail is raised that you are looking for, correct: arm under the tail at the dock, wide- toothed comb thru to the end of the tail pointing AT horse not sideways to him, and cut carefully but fluidly from outside, in, and at a slight angle (not more than an inch, less as desired) going up toward horse. i round the end and buzz cut it with a brandy-new clipper blade if the tail is really thick. length is relative to discipline show criteria.
