Banging a tail gives the tail a fuller look. I personally don't like the look of a tail banged up by the hocks, but if you just trim the bottom up a bit down by the fetlocks (straight accross) to give it that fuller look... I think that looks okay.

Both of my horses have banged tails because when I first got them I didn't know you could do it differently and I think it looks good.

I tend to wash the tail, let it dry, brush it through and then run your hand down the tail. Try and hold all of the tail in your hand and squeeze it together at the bottom and just cut straight across. It's hard to explain lol, but whatever you do ALWAYS brush then repeat the cut, brush then repeat the cut - it's very easy to get a few stray hairs that are longer and it looks really bad

Hard to tell but it is done and has been made a little shorter since the photos. I think it looks great on a nice thick tail.

For banging a tail, you usually have a helper hold your horses tail, under the dock, so you get a natural look when your horse carries their tail a little higher. Then, you either take clippers or scissors and cut straight acrss from left to right or vice versa. Don't do it down to up or up to down, doesn't work (past expreience). I would reccomned banging a tail if your horse has a full tail but it is uneven and you want it to look nice and polished.

I think we should quit calling it "banging", as anything BUT trimming a tail come to mind for me.....
