Post Banding the mane

Our county fair is coming up, and I'm going to band my paints mane for the performance classes. How should I do it? I know I should pull it but his mane is so thin than if I pull it short enough (3-5 inches) he wont have much hair left to band. So do you think I could cut it then band it so he'll have some hair left, then trim up the ends with scissors again when I'm done??
Thanks for the help

I like to band first, then cut with scissors to even it up and give it that *fresh* look. Also, I put a slinky on overnight after banding, so the horse won't mes up bands and to get them to lay nice and flat.

Yea, what Spy said. Also, if the mane is really long you could cut it to about 6 inches to make it easier to band. Then go about your banding and then cut it to desired lenght which is about 4 inches or less.

Thanks for your help! I've always kept it pulled because its so thin it looks pathetic long but pulling it that short would make it really thin. I pulled it last in mid april so not much has grown back.

Thanks again, and I'll let you know how it goes and post pics towards the end of august!
