Question Banding Long Mane?

Well, I think I have decided NOT to cut my yearlings mane for halter. I think instead, I'm going to band it long. I had a reining trainer suggest to band it long. She said she's seen a lot of horses done that way. So, that's what I think I'm going to do. I just can't cut his mane b/c it's so pretty & thick!

What do you think?

I didn't vote one way or the other...if its really thick, it may end up looking really funny banded -- in that case, I would just brush it and leave it natural. However, if it is long and thin, then it will probably look better banded, so I would band it.

I would suggest banding it once just to see how it looks banded, and then decide from there. By all means, don't cut it if you like the long look...I speak from experience.

Ditto to Cowgirl, band it ahead of time and see how it looks. You may need to even it up with some thinning shears to get it straight. It it DOES end up looking poofy and really weird banded, put some gel in it (the stuff us guys use to make our hair rock hard :P ) it it, and brush it after it's dry. It's going to be hard to brush, so don't use a LOT, just a little. It'll make it lay flat, and brushing it out afterwards will keep it from looking crunchy.

I would leave it long. There is a horse at the place I keep mine at that has a GORGEOUSLY long mane and its thick. The owner bands it for shows, as she doesn't want to cut it.

It looks VERY nice banded, and makes it neater.

Banding could work if the mane isn't really thick. When I showed Freedom in halter classes i either braided her mane, just thin braids hanging, not hunter braids, or i banded it in the net, that way the judge could still see her neck for confo, both looked really nice.

I picked cut it and band it only because for halter it just looks so much better and more professional, HOWEVER, if you want to leave it long, be sure it is thin enough that the bands lie nice and flat. Also, the "woven" look for banded manes just does not trip my trigger for any class, at all LOL...a friend of mine used to do that with her paint mare and it looked OK, just not as clean and professional as I like to see, remember...this is just MHO
