Arrow Banding for WP

Ok so Sunset and I are going to be going into WP this year. We will just do some 4h shows and maybe some other local shows. But the 4h takes grooming and presentation very seriously. Sunset has a mane that is VERY long. Probably about two feet long . I dont want to cut it to band it. I saw a picture of a WP horse with a long pulled banded mane. I thought it looked very nice and would look good in it. So has anyone else seen or heard of this? Is it coming back into style?

you know what i like to do with my horses mane that looks so cool you put it into diamonds have you ever heard of this? You band the tops of all his mane then break apart each peice into two and attach those two seperate pieces of mane and keep doing this throught out the whole mane all the way down several times ( takes awhile) but looks totally amazing!!

I wouldnt do that for western pleasure. If you don't want to pull your horses mane, you can just band it like you would a short mane, and then an inch lower than the other bands, put another one. I will have to find you a picture. It isnt necessarily coming into "style" but in wp it is being seen a little more. If you are just doing local shows and 4-H it will be fine to just do it this way. The whole point of having a short banded mane in wp is to keep from distracting the presentation, and so you can see the neck better.

Generally the diamond thing is more seen in english I believe so JMO but I wouldnt do it for wp.

I used diamond bands for gaming last year, but I'd like to band it for WP this year. For english I'm thinking of doing a running braid as those stay in really well for Sunset and she looks really good with it. But for banding a long mane do you still pull it? I don't mind pulling it as it is super thick, I just dont want to cut it.

You should be fine banding it long like Quick2Skip described for 4-H and local shows, unless you head to the state level. There are more horses out there with the longer manes, but not really a trend unless you're talking reiners.
*edit because we posted at the same time*
Try it and see how it looks, if its really thick you might want to pull it, will help with your running braid too!

I can't remember who, but I know one Paint horse went to World last year with a long banded mane. I think he even got CHampion or Reserve.

I've seen it, and it looks nice if your horse has a nice neck.

I said having a long mane in 4-H and local shows would be fine. I wasnt saying that about the diamond pattern. I didnt say that it wasnt cute either, everyone has their own opinion. I wasnt trying to attack you.

I wouldnt pull...But I like a long and thick mane.

I'd just band it, and maybe do two rows of bands about and inch apart. It should be fine for 4H shows. good luck

I've also heard of leaving it free, just brushing it and conditioning it really well. Just make it look like you actually put some work into it. I've seen pics of your horse; she's so beautiful!
