Here is one of me and my guy. YOU can't really see the bands alot, click on it and make it bigger, but you can see why you would want to band it. His hair is shorter than that now, that was end of last year. It holds in neat and nice in place. No movement at all.

BUT you do not want to band/trim your reining horses hair!

If it were me I would just leave it. Ive seen acouple people in the Chronicle with long maned wp 2yr olds and they banded it, and i think it looks weird. I guess it would be okay if the mane is thin but if its really thick it will look like little sausages. lol.

Holly Hover addresses this topic in her showmanship/halter clinic. (She's a judge and trainer from Arizona). She says "If your horse is supposed to have a long mane, ie: for reining or an event along those lines, and it is well cared for then you can leave it natural for western pleasure. BUT it has to be evident that you take proper care of the mane and you actually meant for it to be that long. It can't look like you just didn't have time to fool with it." Of course I condensed quite a bit of what she says, but that's the theory of it. She explains it better, but you know what I mean.

There was a horse in 2yrold western pleasure at paint world and he had a long mane...his mane looked great though..They washed and conditioned it(alot) and showsheened and brushed and kept it looking great...you could tell they put effort into it.
