I want to start showing Dakoda next year, in the local fair, that is if i can get her to take her leads, do halter, keep her head, down and the list goes on and on :P. I would like to be able to band her mane, in western pleasure classes, so she looks better. I need to know the length, and how far apart they need to be. Thanks!

Typicaly the length of hair is average of 5 inches. Each section should be about 1/2 inch and tightly against the crest. If your horse has a thick mane you may have to go with 1/4 inch tightly against the crest. How many bands you get will be determined with how large each band is. http://www.showhorsepromotions.com/banding.htm

Yes I have seen them that short also. I think it looks better with a bit longer hair. I like then at about 4 inches.

The length of the mane and # of bands all depends on the length & shape of your horse's neck. Pull a really thick mane first. More bands of a shorter length can help a short thick neck look longer. A thick throatlatch can be helped out by trimming the mane a little shorter near the bridlepath - blended gradually to the length of the rest of the mane of course. As with everything else horse-related, practise. There is an art to banding (just like braiding) and your first few attempts will look horrible. Don't try it for the first time the night before a show. Good luck! |

That is supposed to be 3 - 5 inches average not just 5 inches average. Typo.

WP manes should be around 2-3 inches long. Or as wide as your four fingers together. The mane should be thinned out by taking some bottom hairs and pulling them out. You should do it after your ride when the pores are opened up. Then what I like to do is take the bottom of the longest section of hair(about 1/2 inch) and hold it tightly and yank the bottom off. Do this on different sections of hair until it's even and where you want it. Then if there's a few strays you can snip those with scissors.
