Hi guys, Questions from an Aussie newbie I'm afraid! After an 18month wait (long story) I finally have my appaloosa - Now I'm trying to work out how not to look like a complete idiot at shows with her (I can do all the English preparation - no probs but its the Western side I'm not 100% on) So q1 is: When banding a mane do you go with bands that disappear into the mane or go for contrasting colour i.e. White on chestnut? and q2: What do you with the tail? Bandage it so it lies flat?? Thanks for tolerance and help! Amda |

What kind of western showing are you doing?

If your horse has a super neck, or neck and head position, and you want to call attention to it then use a contrasting color...such as white on dark manes or.... a color that matches your saddle blanket and show outfit on the light manes. If not then go with a color that matches the mane as close as possible. wink In Western you show the tail natural and unbraided. You can wrap the hair on the dock of the tail with a wet/damp polo wrap to help get and keep the hair nice and smooth. You want the tail with as few hairs sticking out along the top as possible. Just remember to remove it and run a comb thru it before you enter the ring!

Sandra is absolutely right, except, a little tip, here, if you are new to banding, I would personally start off with bands that match your horses mane color. This way, if your band job isn't perfect, it won't stand out as much, the more you band, the better you will get!! until perfection is acheived, stick with the same color as your mane. Congrats on your appy

Also, lotsa appys have thinish tails, so you may consider extensions. The western judges love thick, lush tails. They also like slightly wavy tails. Long too. They should be banged at the fetlock, maybe even longer depending on what kind of showing you do. [ January 24, 2004, 02:05 PM: Message edited by: LordOfDaReins ] |

| Senior Member+ | I was curious because I thought having a "Rat" tail was one of the breed characteristics and you were not allowed to hide any of the breed's characteristics...you know like you can only use clear hoof polish on the hoofs....like that. Hey Spyro....your the "App-Expert" here....do you know if tail extensions are legal at App Shows?

Very true. They probably arent illegal in some shows, like if she was competing against paints and quarter horses, it probably wouldn't be a problem, since it would be more to make a " healthy, well kept horse" impression. I do belive that it is illegal in breed classes. Not to mention, that it would probably be hard to find extensions that don't look odd against an appy's multicolored tail, if he had a multicolored tails.
