I usually band it, its all personal preferance though, some people get fancy and put like three bands in it, some braid. I just think it looks neater and finished when its banded.

Depends on the forelock and what even youre showing in. For horses with huge forelocks I like it out for events like trail and western riding. But for classes like showmanship or horsemanship it looks better banded. Usually the smaller the forelock the less you band it. If it's poofy and out of control it works well to put in 2 or 3 bands, like we do with my mare. Fore horses with a normal forelock, just a single band looks nice as well. Some horses with really out of control forelocks french braid it. Here are pics of each:

Single band, see how it's still frizzy and poofy looking? doesn't work well with my horse

2 bands, controls the top part of it better. Although in this pic the 2st band is put in poorly

Left out, it doesnt really work for her because theres not enough forelock for it to look good. Plus she has a cowlick on the underside of it, and it lays funny

3 bands, works well with this horse too.

i agree with phorelockless. But i've also seen some people braid the forelock as well. But many i see usually put a lot of gel in it and leave it be.
