I'm hoping you guys can help me with somthing. I've got this filly who's losing her winter coat but she's balding, and I mean full blown not a hair on some of these patches. I don't think they are rubbed off as some are in areas that couldn't be rubbed such as her back. she has two 2 inch round spots on her back a bigger patch at the poll and on her chest. Does anyone have any idea why this is? she's just been wormed, she gets good hay, and is given a young horse supplement every day at dinner and she has a red salt block. And we have electirc fences so she isn't likely to be even touching the fences to rub even though it doesn't look rubbed. I'm hoping someone might know what this could be from. A friend of mine thought ringworm but I'm not really sure. I'd just like some ideas about it before I call the vet. I've also hosed her down a couple days ago in hopes that it was just a skin irritant but when I went out today the patch on her chest was new.

could it maybe be round worm??? i know my 3y/o paint mare has VERY sily and fine hair, and when she sheds her winter coat, places like on her neck and hips and back where the white is will go bald, turn pink, and then hair grows in REAL fine, and then she'll shed it again, and it comes back fine. but it's only in the white areas. maybe a fungus even?? try washing her with anit-fungal shampoo and see if it helps in a few days

It could be a fungus or a type of ringworm. You can start by washing her with betadine. Then try a product for skin conditions like MTG |

yea I'm leaning towards teh round worm idea, I've been trying hibitane on the patches which I have found works wonders with fungus and i seems to have little effect. it was only on her white areas until I checked today and the one on her chest is in the brown. I'll try and find this bedatine, where i lvie it's very difficult to get horse products, would they sell it at a farm place or do I have to get it from a vet or something? The bald spots look sore and theres a sort of scab or blemish spots in them. They don't seem to bother her, but I'm worried she could get sun burn on areas like the poll of her head.

sounds like it could be lice. The horse can be missing hair from rubbing. Lice are brown and usually found down next to the skin. They maybe hard to see unless you part the hair and use a light and a magnifying glass, if you watch for a moment, you will be able to see them moving around.
