What would you say would be a good diet for a young growing horse, my belgin/TB shes 16hh 950 lbs,(1.5 yo)and she has been haveing very large growth spurts and i am afraid i am not feeding her enough, and i want to make sure she is getting the right diet. I want her to grow to her full potental heres what she gets: 2 ponds of grain once a day (omelean 100) 2 flakes of hay twice a day (grass hay) (and of coures treats lol) I dont think i am feeding her enought seeing she is half draft but i am not sure some days she eats it all sometimes she dosent, she is not skinny in the slightest bit, can feel her ribs unless i push a little. What do you all feed your little ones? i just want to make sure i am on the right track. some one told me to give alfalfa but all of my horses eat together sometimes and my arab cant have alfalfa, so i have to stick woth grass should she get more less? its my first baby horse so i am a little comfused. |

when i was looking at a welsh pony that was 1.5 yrs old the owner told me that she was fed 1 pound a day of omolene 100 and 2 flakes of hay but she was a pony(only 11.2hh)... the diet u have your little one on sounds good by the way u describe how you feel the ribs...if you are worried about not feeding enough ask your vet...they should be able to tell you if you are feeding enough or not...hope this helps ~*pAiGe*~

You said that she was eating grain once per day, I would change that to twice per day, 3 times is better, not up her any, just spread the grain out over the day, horses bodies will utilize it better than one big feeding. Orchard grass is great for the babies. I would say that you are doing things right.

thanks sypro..i meant to put that..im sorta out of it today... its definatly better to feed in small frequent meals rather than one large meal..i knew a lady and while her horse recovering from an injury she fed him 4 times a day but he got the same amount of grain he always did.

the only problem with feeding grain 2-3times a day is i am in school and in the morning i am able to throw hay to them and then they get grain when i get home along with some more hay and then i go to basketball practice so it makess it hard to feed grain so often, i get over there more often in the summer and spring but winter is basketball season.

if you can't feed her 2-3 times a day its ok but it would be best if you could..my friend can't feed her horses twice a day and they are doing fine...
