I guess it varies with the horse. Some find out ways to remove it. I prefer braiding and wrapping if it will stay on.

I leave all my show horses' tails alone and they all have gorgeous tails. The times I've tried to bag it, they end up catching it on stuff and pulling out big chunks, or it gets totally matted from the braid rubbing against the inside of the bag. I've tried every brand of tailbag I could find and nothing seemed to work that great so I just leave them alone now, and they seem to be doing better than ever. It's less work for me too
