My show horses all have their tails wrapped up all the time because they drag on the ground but I know that is only the style for certain breeds....however i can definitly say that having the tails up promotes growth. I have had horses whose tails are out and they get ripped and torn and the hair breaks off more. I would never let my horses tail loose again ( except when we are showing of course ) LOL! I don't know that's just my opinion but i definitly think that keeping a horses tail up is better for growth...plus it says clean! The only thing i would say is just that you should un-rap it at least once a month to wash and condition it and cut of the dead or split ends.

This is how we put tails up, actually I made a thread about it, even shows how to attatch twine to the bottom so that they have a nice flyswatter.

Wrapping a Tail.
yea we braid our tails and then rap our horses tails in vet wrap too but I like to put a tail bag over the vet rap just cuz i like all the fun colors and prints! ( plus sometimes shavings and dirt get stuck on the vet wrap... eww ) LOL!

And what exactly would that look like?

It seems to me all the miniatures' tails look like anyone elses. Here is my new gelding.. I would say he has a nice, decent tail.

Anyway, I do exactly as Beau does.. And, I give hot oil treatments once every month or two. I LOVE picking out all the colors to vet wrap their tails with.. I have aquired quite the assortment.

as far as growth i think just leaving and not brushing them works out very well.
but if you want them off the ground so they dont step on them..
make a 3-4 figure 8 knots and then vet wrap over the top..they only have to be changed every month and washed..if you want to see what they look like..ill get pictures tomorrow.
Used by all the friesians and QH at my barn

Thanks guys, I really prefer thickness over length, I bang them anyways so they are the same length as the fake tails.

We always bag our show horses. We use a satin lined tailbag and plait the clean tail in a loose plait. This is Sam when he was showing and now.(Hes out with foot problems). I know the second one is not the best of his tail but I think you san get the idea

This is the type of bag we use it must be satin lined and can attach the flap to even the lightest fly sheet for hot days. Ours are on both fly sheets and light cotton sheets.

These make a huge difference and depending on how oily your horse is you can go from two to several weeks without having to wash again. An occassional brush to remove dead falling out hair seems to keep them in good order.

Lol, one of my books explained it to me.
Bagging apparently does nothing to encourage growth, or even health.
Without the bag, a few longs hair get tugged out, like it the horse catches a piece on the fence, or snagges it on a plant/the other horse's teeth... It does that every day, and eventually the tail can look kinda rough around the edges, from the long hairs being pulled out over time.
With the bag/vet wrap, it keeps the long hairs from being pulled out. If they're not getting pulled out, then the tail keeps growing at the same rate, but since it's not filling in places, the tail looks fuller, and can get longer. And with the Co-Flex stuff (not vetwrap) it even seems to keep moisture in the hair, so it's always shiny and healthy looking.

It's just a matter of opinion, and what's best for each individual tail. In the winter, you'll never see my horses unwrapped unless it's wet.

I use tail bags and I really like them, HOWEVER...my new guy will NOT keep his in...what's the trick? I've tried the fancy polyester sock with the three pieces that you bag, i've tried a regular sock with pony tail holders...he won't keep them in. What to do?
