It's likely his sole exfoliating. What you're seeing is (probably) dead sole that is flaking off on its own.

that is one of the problems with most thrush medications, they are VERY drying! i like to overflow the water tank each time i fill it, to keep a wet spot so they can get some moisture to their feet.

I think the green stuff your using is Coppertox, its stains everything with works well. and prevents it. Thrush buster works great too.

It's really impossible to say without seeing the feet and determining what is causing the flakiness. If it's simply normal sole exfoliation, that's fine. If its the sole sloughing off due to spreading infection, that's not fine. If it's a build up of sole that's been allowed to accumulate without natural shedding, that's fine in and of itself, but the circumstances causing it are not fine.

I use a product called Virkon. Comes in a powder, mix it with water, spray, soak, or flush. It kills thrush in two treatments but of course, if you're dealing with a closed-over frog crevice, you will have to continue to treat it daily until it's fully opened up again. Virkon is very gentle and non-irritant. I use it on scratches/rainrot/mud fever funguses with great success. It works quicker and more efficiently than anything else I've had.

One technique I use on a mare of mine who has a very closed over frog crevice is to load a syringe with the Virkon, get the tip of the syringe down into the crevice from the edge closest to the heel bulbs, and then flush it. I will continue to do this until she's grown a frog and opened up the crevice.

What part of the frog is affected by thrush right now? The center crevice or the sides of the frog? The frog does not look particularly closed over in the center (so you won't need to syringe-flush them), although the toes look too long from my viewpoint. But that's another matter. lol

What that frog does look in need of is some more ground contact than it's getting. There are a variety of ways to do this. Shoeing options are plentiful, but can be risky considering most of them involve covering the frog with something- if thrush is present, you want that frog to have as much air as possible. Going barefoot for a while is another, but that can be quite complicated if the horse comes up lame without his shoes.

It would be helpful to see photos of this horse's feet. Now it could be possible that they're in good condition now, but the thrush had such a strong hold at a time when they weren't, that it's not letting go now either.

If it's as bad as it sounds, it's time for systemic treatment. Meaning oral (or injected) antibiotics as well as topical treatments.

In a situation like this, you want to use the least caustic meds you can (which absolutely 100% means no clorox!). As you want to preserve every last bit of healthy growth that you can get.

Now, are the frogs (or frog area) open into the live tissue? Or are they just so shriveled up that they appear to be 'gone'?
