I know of two barrel racing horses that are awesome. One was one of the top barrel horses in Michigan and one was one of the top barrel horses in the country!

Well there's good news and bad news

The good news is that the vet didn't find anything. The bad news is that the vet didn't find anything

We got to Massey and unloaded Tally. Obviously since he was in a new place, he was gawking like an idiot and his eye looked normal. It took a bit to convince him into the equine section. It took even more convincing (ie three male vet students pushing him in from behind.

Tally then went beserk :-D He was not impressed about being confined and charged back and forward before crib-biting and pulling paint off the walls, then bashing the (metal!) door with his front feet...then crib-biting on the bars and weaving....Apparently stabling brings back bad memories

The vets then tried to take his temperature etc and Tally kept trying to bite them. He was then sedated. He refused to go into the treatment room and ended up with 6 or 7 vet students shoving him from behind :-D

He was then poked, prodded, had his eye dyed, had it flushed, had his tear duct flushed (he was sooo not thrilled about that even though he was sedated), then had his eye poked and prodded again...then has his head x-rayed and ultrasounded. They found absolutely nothing wrong with him. No corneal ulcer, no uveitis, no scratches, no glaucoma, no retinal detachment, no tumours, nothing wrong with his skull and no blocked sinuses.

The conclusion was that he probably bumped it again and he now gets eye ointment twice a day (that was fun...) and bute twice a day for 5 days.

It did rule out pretty much everything, taught me that there's a reason I don't stable my horses  and while wandering aimlessly around the Massey campus, Mum and I met up with a former workmate of hers and he said that we could come and see his labs whenever we wanted :-D

So it's good news and bad news, there's still no real diagnosis but practically everything has been ruled out :-D

Pepper, an Appy, ended up diagnosed with Uveitis. He have everything that has been stated above then was diagnosed with uveitis. His lens detatched and was free floating in his eye. It was weird and yes we was going blind when taken to the vet and is now completely blind in that eye and the other eye isnt looking so good either. He was taken to Rood and Riddle in Lexington KY. They were going to try a new approach to administering eye medication on a full term basis. A small medication filled ball was to be inserted into his eye and thus slow release of constant medication. However with the damage that was already done and the amount of money that had been spent and the medication filled ball is no gurantee (the positive chance of healing was still low) THe owner of Pepper opted to not go through with the insertion. At the same time he was diagnosed with various allergies and has his tear ducts flushed and What ever else they did to him. They also evaluated him to see how progressive the COPD was which he allready had. He also had a suspicious section of his lower eye lid examined and biopsied. No cancer (non carcinoma) thank goodness. It was a flat rough section and did not hinder his eye sight. This horse at that time was only 13 years old. He wore a mask 24/7. I washed his face every day I was there to help with the crusties because of the drainage. (no one else would do it and he would end up with raw gooey skin on his face. I was only weekend manager and could not wash him every day.) He was a pretty good boy about it all. He is the traditional (Nez Perce) type Appy. He was kind of ugly looking but none the less he was a pretty good boy, he had his moments though. As far as I know he is still living and doing well.

Good luck tommorow, hopefully it wont be as drastic as losing his eye.
I have ridden a horse with one eye and he was fine.

oooppps didnt read the last posts to see he had already been there .

Tally's now very happily resting in his paddock, he's being surprisingly well behaved about having ointment in his eye (ie he only reared once...) and he adores his bute sandwiches.

Hopefully it'll sort itself out...hopefully...hopefully.
