The horse I just got has really bad chipped and cracked hooves. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestons for this. I was also wondering if it hurts the horse to ride it like that. I was told to put used motor oil on her hooves. But I just don't know.

"Get thee to a farrier." If the horse is barefoot & chipped & split, the chips can split & the cracks can get worse. Dont used motor oil; there's way too many chemicals & detergents in there for it to be good for hooves. My horse had a wicked toecrack for a long time, and shoes on (front) to stabilize it. I like Hoofmaker as a dressing. He's been barefoot for years now.

You really need to get him to a ferrier and have him access the hooves, then you can make an informed decision about what you should do.

I agree with the rest, get a farrier, and then make sure you take care of his feet. There are many products out there like tuff hoof and stuff that will help

Get a farrier there, pronto. Sierra's hooves are chipped now and I feel horrible for taking her to the fair, but our farrier is so lame with calling back! We had to cancel our July 6th appointment b/c it was my birthday. Now he's like... NOT GETTING BACK TO ME! After TWO CALLS! Meh... anyways, I'm in the same boat as you. But get a farrier out there.

You dont want to use motor oil if it is used. The old motor oil has metal savings from the engine and will work its way into the hoof causing the hoof to have absesses. You need to feed the hoof and not apply hoof dressings. For cracked, weak, shelly hooves you need to feed the following supplements: Voitin, methionine, zinc, fatty acids, and sometimes sulfur. You may have to feed more than one supplement to obtain all of the above nutrients. Hoof dressings have limited value for acute or chronic hoof problems. A proper diet and hoof care program are the most important weapons agains hoof problems. Hoof dressings dont seem to have much of an effect on good guality feet, but can further damage poor feet. Hoof dressings with drying agents such as formalin decrease elasticity of the hoof wall, causing it to be more brittle.
