Bad Coat and Dandruff.

My new horse Veggie (Vega) has a dullish coat (tho it can shine it good light) that easily seems to get rubbed so he as nearly no hair in certain spots. When I got him about 2 weeks ago he had already shoulder rubs, leg rubs and saddle rubs (not by the withers but at the back of the saddle). Now I am gonna get a saddle fitter out to ensure my saddle fits him correctly but I think he just rubs his coat out real easy. Also he has got a pretty bad dandruffy mane.
Do you guys know of any shampoo/ oils/ supplements or the like to help his coat out. I am in canada so I need things I can get from around here. Thx.
Oh and he is a tb so he probably has a bit thin skin anyways but just anyhting to help.

I would maybe try hot oiling him... Ultra makes a nice hot oil that is very economical. For shoulder rubs, it's often from either an ill-fitting blanket, or (like my horse ) from having to wear a blanket for extended periods of time... I use a shoulder guard and it always helps. I have 2 of them from W'underwear (they're a bit pricey, but they are REALLY nice... I was lucky and found one on e-bay and the other was given to me by a friend) Where on the legs does he get rubs? My horse gets hock rubs (it doesn't matter HOW much bedding he has or what kind of flooring he is on, he still gets them *ugh*) I just coat them with Bag Balm and when I show I spray some Shapley's touch-up onto them so that you don't really notice it. I've never heard of a horse getting a saddle rub at the back of the saddle... that's really strange - let us know if you ever figure out how he managed that one *lol*

I feed my hore MirraCoat (a fatty-acid coat upplement) and Flax seed (I feed about 1.5 oz ground up in a coffee grinder a day) and a squirt of corn oil.

Thanks for the reply. He doesn't get rubs on his legs he gets rubs on his belly from the riders leg. Ya if his shoulder rubsa don't get better from my blankets (maybe mine fit better than the old owner's did) then I will use my shoulder guard.
I have given hot oil treatments to my dog but never to a horse. I will see if I can find some.

Here I circled all his rub marks. See how the one's on his back (he has the two circle-ly rubbed spots on both sides of his back) are where the back of the saddle sits.

Oh ya and thanks for the supplement and feed tips!

Poor coat is usually a sign of poor health? But I do think some of those could be from blanket rub. Definitely try a shoulder guard...

Is he dehydrated? I've seen a few horses get "flaky" skin, and then was fixed by adding electrolites to their feed. My mare had it...and now it's gone

Hmm. I will try a pinch test on him tomorrow and see. He always has fresh water available but maybe he isn't drinking enough.

I use flax seed as well with my horses, they get it with their meals, just a little bit, not much, every day all year round. Helps control dandruff and creates a shinier healthier coat, mane and tail. They get more in the winter because of blanketing etc, never had a problem with rubs since I put them on it.

we use cocasoya, and we give it to them in their feed. It works really well to get the coat nice and shiny. As for the rubs I am not sure, I hope you are able to figure it out.
