Ahem...back on topic.

My friend has a ten year old Arab mare that she dearly loves and rides. She is 47 years old and has had trained and taken excellent care of her various horses all her life. She keeps two and boards one (mine). She wants, more than anything, a baby out of this mare who is currently at the studs residence. She is already so excited about the possibility of a foal in the spring, that she is nearly impossible to be around. Is her mare registered? Was she expensive? Has she been shown? No, no and no. However, her mare could be registered, and has Bask, Muscat, Khemosabi, Fersyn, El Hadiyi and many more in her family tree. She never registered her because it didn't matter to her. The mare came to her as a two year old, from her vet who, at seeing how completely distraught she was over having to put down her 29 year old Quarab gelding...offered her the mare for $600, because he had recieved her as payment for a past due bill from another client.

She is breeding her to a local, relatively unknown, but handsome Arab stud, for the very small breeding fee of $250. It will be his first crop of babies, so he is still, unproven. All of these factors could be labeled "backyard breeder" I guess, because pretty much if you uses the term literally, that is what it would be. But this baby will be cherished, loved, pampered and never sold.

Yes, she could have adopted, but not cheaper I don't think. But she loves her mare without equal and wants more than anything, a baby out of her. I don't see the need to condemn her for it. I hate but understand the stigma attached to the term "backyard breeder". But there are those who do it responsibly and with alot of love.

and quite frankly....I'm pretty excited about a fuzzy little baby myself. I'll post pictures in the spring.

Good for your friend. She has the right to breed her mare. I do not condone backyard breeders who breed with the intent to sell or to collect pasture ornaments but if she intends to give the foal a wonderful home and it is from quality parents, (giving it a market value if she ever cannot care for it) then it is ok. Circumstances around breeding are not always black and white. I am not buying her hay or grain nor can it be assumed the resulting foal will be a burden to anyone other than it's owner so it is not my business nor anyone elses whether or not the foal is bred and then exists. These matters only become the business of others when horse abuse or neglect comes into play. Enjoy the foal and best of luck to you and your friend.
