I have tried and tried and bing wont back she starts to get a bit upset when I try to get her to back. So my thought is she never was taught .

There is so much more to teaching a horse to back up than just pulling on the bit/halter. I have sent you a link that I think is very comprehensive and thoughtful in teaching a horse how to back and WHY they are resistent to it at first.
Good luck.

I'd suggest having someone on the ground with you asking her to back as you are asking her in the saddle. Eventually she'll put 2 and 2 together.

But I might just say smitty is really right...there is a TONE more than just pulling backwards. My horse refuses to back if you ask in that manner

My daughter's mare had no "reverse" (under saddle) when we got her. She was 16 years old and dead broke, so we figured something must have happened to her to make her not want to back up. BUT, the first thing we did was check her teeth, back and saddle fit to make sure nothing making her sore.

Then I took her to my trainer and she worked with her. It was so sad cuz when my trainer would cue her to back up...her whole body would just tremble. I felt so bad for her. You could tell she thought something was going to eat her. Once my trainer got her take that first step back, she released the pressure and then rewarded her. Betty was like..."hey, that wasn't so bad I guess." Now she backs like a pro.
